November 9, 2016, Orono, Maine- After a year and a half of presidential debates, primaries, caucuses, and rallies, Donald Trump, a wealthy businessman from New York was elected as the 45th president of the United States. Trump, who is from the Republican Party, was running against Democratic Nominee, Hillary Clinton. Statistics show that during the beginning of the electoral votes count, Clinton and Trump had a close battle, with only a few electoral votes apart.  The southern states and the majority of the states in the midwest voted for Donald Trump.  After 9:00 P.M. Eastern Time, Donald Trump received a tremendous number of electoral votes, leaving Hillary Clinton behind.  But late in the election, Hillary Clinton received 55 electoral votes from the state of California, getting back into the race for the White House.  Even though Hillary Clinton won the popular vote by 200,000 votes, Donald Trump had the most electoral votes. The Electoral College is the official procedure for deciding who is the next President of the United States.  At the end of the election, Hillary Clinton had 228 electoral votes and Donald Trump had 279 votes, which is nine more votes than 270, which is a number of electoral votes a candidate needs to earn to win.  The next morning after the election, the citizens from the Democratic Party were very upset to have their candidate lose this election.  Many of the Democratic citizens went on cic.gc.ca, which is the Canadian Immigration website, to apply for immigration for the  immigration to Canada.  However, there were so many people on the immigration site at once, that the website crashed.  This was very frustrating for everybody on the website since they could not access the website.  While the Democrats experienced problems on cic.gc.ca, social media is still stuffing up with posts and tweets regarding the unexpected results from the election.  Social media was not only being heavily used, but many news websites have published substantial amounts of stories with apropos to the election.  The 2016 Presidential Election was a Presidential Election to never forget.
