Tracking Hurricane Matthew

By Katherine Kohtala

Hurricane Matthew has been a storm to remember, setting its sights on on Haiti and the Eastern Coast, slamming into Florida and cause deaths and record-breaking flooding. Shack-like houses have been utterly flattened across Haiti. Pavement has been destroyed near a boardwalk in Vero Beach, Florida that I have visited just last summer. The confirmed death count in Haiti alone have risen to 372, with the number climbing rapidly by the minute.

Hurricane Matthew started as a tropical storm in the Caribbean Sea, but as it made its way northward it grew and grew, striking Haiti as a category 4 hurricane. Flimsy houses stood no chance against Matthew’s fury. Death and destruction swarms Haiti. And then there is the U.S.A. Hurricane Matthew has caused flash flooding. The east coast of Florida has been slammed by the then category 3 Hurricane. I have been to Vero Beach, Florida and stood in a parking lot that has now crumbled under the force of the hurricane. Hurricane is as of now responsible for 4 U.S. deaths.

So, where is Hurricane Matthew now? Well, after making it’s way up the east coast, it most recently has hit North Carolina, causing 17 deaths and flooding.  Hurricane Matthew has now moved seaward, and appears to pose no threat. But another threat looms. Tropical Storm Nicole. But little is currently known about how threatening Nicole is. When it comes to the weather, I will keep you updated.
